Navy takes two games from Lions, 4-0, 6-5

Collegian Sports Writer

Navy brought out its big guns yesterday to battle Penn State on the diamond, blowing the Lions away, 4-0 and 6-5.

The Midshipmen (7-7) held the Lions scoreless in the opener. It was the first time Penn State (8-7) has been shut out this season. The shelling began in the bottom of the first off Lion starter Mike McRoberts. McRoberts (2-2), who has been used primarily as a reliever this season, was victimized by poor defense in the early innings. The Lions committed four errors in the first two innings.

The Penn State bats also went cold in Maryland. Entering yesterday's action the Lions' were hitting better than .350 as a team. Yesterday, however, catcher Travis Crayosky was the only player with a multiple-hit game. His two singles were part of an inept offense that failed to get an extra base hit.

The Lions made a better showing in the nightcap as they rallied from behind and took a one-run lead, only to lose by a run in nine innings.

With the score tied 4-4, Penn State scratched out a run in the top of the ninth inning. Freshman Lou Russell led off the ninth with a walk. Craig McRoberts' sacrifice bunt advanced Russell into scoring position. Coach Shorty Stoner sent pitcher Steve Marlow in to pinch run for Russell. Speed was not needed though, as Crayosky easily drove in Marlow with a double.

Shortstop Mike Killough went 3-for-3 in the second game including a double, triple and RBI. Second baseman Russ Mushinsky aided the offense as well, going 2-for-4 with a triple and RBI, while Russell, starting his first game of the season, contributed two hits.

Jeff Burris, who had pitched only 11/3 innings all season, could not hold the lead in the bottom of the inning. Two Midshipmen singles and a sacrifice bunt, put the winning runs in scoring position. A single down the first base line was just out of the reach of first baseman John Schreiner and scored the two Navy runners.

After a string of five consecutive victories, the Lions have now lost three in a row. The Lions are hoping that the return of O.J. McDuffie tomorrow against winless Temple will help them get back in the win column.
