Outgoing Undergraduate Student Government President Janyne Althaus expressed distaste for the USG senate during her last presidential report, saying the senate wastes its time.
"This is my last meeting and I'd like to share my thoughts on what it was like to work with you," Althaus said. "Of all the things I had to do as USG president, this was the biggest waste of time."
"You spent four months trying to impeach me and you weren't here for four months in the summer," she added.
Last night the 20th congress met for the last time. Next week the newly elected senate will choose its new leaders, and newly elected Vice President Sue Williams will chair the meeting.
Althaus said it was difficult to deal with the senate because many members were upset about working with a woman and expected former Senate President Kendall Houk to be president.
"They came in thinking I was a pushover," Althaus said. "They can't push me around and tell me what to do. They were angry because they didn't know how to take me."
Althaus said sarcastically that she enjoyed hearing people talk behind her back about her nicknames, such as pit bull or despotic monarch, and gossip about her love affairs.
"I wish my love affairs were as exciting as you made them."
Novick agreed the senate wasted its time, but said at times it was a pleasure to work with the senate. He was disappointed that the senate and executives could not work together more, he added.
Senators had differing opinions about Althaus's criticisms. Some agreed with Althaus' statement that the senate intentionally made her job difficult.
"I felt what she was saying was from her heart and accurately describes the senate's attitude for the last year," said town Senator Henry Kohnlein. Kohnlein added that the senate did not do anything of great service, such as the opening of Pollock Library for 24 hours, a task Althaus accomplished.
Town Senator Julie Thomas said Althaus's speech was inappropriate, especially since most of the senators she had problems with are no longer senators.
"I don't think she had any more work to do," Thomas said. "While she was up for impeachment, we were still getting things done. This was a bad way to handle it."
Senate President Ron Marlow gave his closing senate presidential speech commending the senate on its attempted accomplishments. He also reminded the senate to remember the importance of USG.
"Have faith in yourselves," Marlow said. "I invited people to speak at the meetings to show you that you do matter. Saying you are on student government can get you in doors faster than others."
He added that the senate should support the new president but not be afraid to challenge him.
In other business, the senate passed a resolution to eliminate the inconsistencies in the elections code that led USG Chief Supreme Court Justice to place an injunction on the Elections Court.
