I am writing to protest an element of the article of the Whitehead/Winner candidacy in the Collegian (March 16).
Whitehead described homosexuality as "contradictory to civilization." This is offensive enough, but to not have it placed in quotes is even worse.
Whitehead can say anything he wants, and it may be newsworthy, but even the layman knows that phrases taken from an interviewee are placed between quotation marks. Not to do so implies that the statement is factual or generally accepted.
I noticed that in the same issue you printed an editorial supporting the inclusion of sexual orientation in the non-discrimination statement, so I do not suspect you of homophobia. However, a little more editorial care might save your readers some jarring.
