Joe Walsh, a former guitarist for the Eagles, will highlight the 16th annual Beta Sigma Beta Sy Barash Regatta April 22, while organizers aim to make the spring tradition more of a carnival with new events and professional food caterers.
A big name like Walsh -- who now performs solo -- will attract a lot of people and bring in more money for the American Cancer Society, said Marty Guthrie, director of governmental affairs for the National Association of Financial Aid Administrators.
Walsh's latest album, Got Any Gum, was released in 1987. He went solo in 1981 after the Eagles released its Eagles Live album.
Other bands performing at the event have not been decided, said Noreen Walsh, regatta co-chairman. The Hooters performed last year for more than 15,000 people.
Event organizers aim to raise $65,000, an increase over last year's $52,000, through canning, and the sale of tickets, T-shirts and coupon booklets.
To increase attendance and generate more money, event organizers are trying to create a carnival-like atmosphere with more activities, Noreen Walsh said.
"This year the regatta will not be just a concert, it will be more than that," she said.
Dunking booths, games of chance and similar events will be added this year to make the regatta more exciting, Noreen Walsh said. But many of the old events such as the tug-of-war and canoe race are still being held, she added.
This year the event is being professionally catered to decrease the long lines and offer a greater variety of foods, Noreen Walsh said.
This will be the second year no food, alcohol or bags will be allowed at the event due to Bald Eagle State Park regulations. Park officials banned the items to prevent alcohol abuse.
The event, sponsored by Uni-Mart and radio station B 103, will be held at Bald Eagle State Park.
