Baseball team wins 3 weekend games

Collegian Sports Writer

Call it Shorty Stoner's victory tour. When the baseball team traveled to New York last weekend, it had three goals in mind -- stingy pitching, timely hitting and Stoner's 200th win as a Penn State coach.

The Lions played four games this weekend and won three, raising their season record to 8-5.

On Saturday afternoon the Lions accomplished all three of their goals. Penn State sent its two best pitchers to the mound against C.W. Post in hopes of avenging last season's doubleheader loss. Pitcher Greg Young continued his winning ways in the opener with a complete-game, 5-1 victory.

The Lions jumped on the C.W. Post pitcher early. O.J. McDuffie led off the first inning with a single, extending his hitting streak to 10 games. An RBI single by John Schreiner drove in McDuffie. Later in the inning, a C.W. Post error allowed the Lions' second run to score.

That was all the offense Young would need, as he allowed just six hits the rest of the game. Young has yielded just one run and 10 hits over his last two outings.

In the fourth inning the Lions gave Young some insurance runs, though. Following John Konawalik's double, a triple by Chris Futrick and a Scott Biesecker single plated two more Penn State runs.

In the nightcap, Gary Miller went to the hill, hoping to give the Lions an encore performance of Young's earlier work. Miller was equally as impressive, limiting C.W. Post to five hits and three walks en route to a complete game masterpiece of his own.

An RBI triple by Russ Mushinsky and a two-run home run by Jeff Kavelak broke a 3-3 fifth inning tie, leading the Lions to a 9-3 triumph.

Yesterday afternoon Penn State attempted to extend its four-game winning streak when it squared off against Siena. Stoner gave Jeff LaBuda the ball in the opener. LaBuda lasted only three innings, though, surrendering four earned runs and seven hits.

The Lions' offense came through once again, though, pounding out 10 hits in a 9-6 win. McDuffie went 3-for-4, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. Russ Mushinsky and Jeff Kavelak provided the muscle, driving in five of the nine runs.

"Our hitters keep doing a real nice job," assistant coach Randy Ford said. "They are meshing real well together."

Chris Church relieved LaBuda in the fourth and earned the win by holding Siena to two runs the rest of the way.

Penn State faced host New York Tech in the second game yesterday. However, the Lions could not pull off the weekend sweep as they fell to Tech, 10-8.

Brian Ishler started for Penn State, but was shelled for nine runs (eight earned) and 12 hits in his four-inning performance.

"Brian threw real well," Ford said. "He just didn't get the breaks."

McDuffie, continuing his torrid hitting, went 1-for-3 in the nightcap. John Schreiner's home run and three RBI fueled the Lions' attack, but it was not enough.

NOTE: McDuffie's 13-game hitting streak is the third longest in Penn State history.
