After garnering the 1,300th win in Penn State baseball history with a victory last Sunday against LaSalle, Coach Shorty Stoner lies just one victory away from his 200th career victory. He will be searching for that win when the team travels into the unfriendly and unknown confines of New York this weekend.
C.W. Post, New York Tech and Sienna will stand in Stoner's way. After an entire week off, Stoner will have the luxury of a fresh pitching staff. Staff ace Gary Miller and Greg Young are expected to get the starts in the doubleheader against C.W. Post tomorrow. Miller has started slowly this season, going 0-1 in his first three starts with a 6.14 ERA.
"Miller has not been sharp in his last couple of outings," Stoner said.
Young, on the other hand, pitched well in his last start, shutting out La Salle, 8-0 while surrendering just four singles.
Last year C.W. Post swept the Lions, 4-3 and 4-0 as they limited Penn State to a mere nine hits over the two contests. Stoner was upset and wants to return the favor this year.
"We were a better ballclub," Stoner said. "We just didn't get the job done."
The Lions, who are batting .353 as a team thus far, have been knocking the cover off the ball as of late and hope that this trend continues this weekend.
"Our hitting has been real good up to now, while our pitching has been struggling," second baseman Russ Mushinsky said. "We will need a combination of the two if we are to win."
On Sunday the Lions will face two schools relatively unknown to them. In Sunday's first game, Penn State will battle Siena, a school Stoner has never faced before. Jeff LaBuda is expected to get the start. LaBuda (1-1, 7.56 ERA) has not started since facing St. Joseph's three weeks ago.
In the nightcap, the Lions will square off against host New York Tech. It will be just the second series that Penn State has ever played against Tech. The two squads split the two contests the last time they met. Although they have met just once before, Stoner still has the utmost respect for them, calling them "an outstanding program."
NOTES: Penn State will reschedule last Tuesday's doubleheader against Bloomsburg for a later date. The cancelled doubleheader against Pittsburgh will not be rescheduled.
