The 12th annual Penn State Slavic Folk Festival will honor the achievements of Pennsylvania's Slavic-American groups this weekend in the HUB Ballroom with dances and ethnic food.
The Penn State Chapter of Dobro Slovo, a national Slavic studies honor society, and the University's Department of Slavic Languages are sponsoring the event.
"We are very aware of the need for ethnic diversity," said Lorraine Kapitanoff, chapter adviser for Dobro Slovo.
The event, expecting to attract 2,000 people, will be highlighted by a children's show at 10 this morning and by two different dance troupes performing on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, she added.
The festival is open to the public and free, except for the hot ethnic foods served Friday and Saturday.
The events planned for the festival include:
-- A folk dance troupe will perform at 7 tonight.
-- A Czechoslovakian dance troupe from New York and the Serbian ensemble and Ukrainian dancers will perform at 1 p.m. Saturday. Also performing that afternoon is "Slavjane," a Carpatho-Rusyn dance troupe from Pittsburgh.
-- Penn State's Internationale Dancers will perform at 6:30 Saturday night following the Polish dance ensemble.
--On Sunday the activities will begin with "Limbora," a Slavic dance troupe from New York City. Ukrainian dancers and the Serbian ensemble will later perform until the event ends at 5:30 Sunday afternoon.
