Dorm commons all over campus swarmed with candidates and their supporters as students voted in area elections yesterday.
Students voted for candidates seeking presidential, vice presidential and Association of Residence Hall Students representative positions in all residence areas. Secretary, treasurer and Residence Hall Advisory Board representative positions were appointed or elected, depending on each area's constitution.
Due to constitutional specifics, candidates vying for presidential and vice presidential positions in Centre, North and West Halls ran on one ticket, while candidates in Pollock/Nittany, East and South Halls campaigned separately.
In Centre Halls, Jennifer Orr and Michelle Rios won the presidential/vice presidential race. Uncontested candidates Tracey Farmer and Timothy Kellogg won as Centre's ARHS representatives.
Uncontested presidential candidate Scott Battaglia and vice presidential hopeful Huong (Maria) Thu Trinh, also uncontested, won in East Halls. Vicki Villani captured the race for secretary, while Diane M. Shellenberger was elected treasurer. Candidate Kevin J. Howard was elected as ARHS representative, and Jessica Ritter got the other opening as ARHS representative.
The uncontested presidential/vice presidential ticket of Ed Marflak and Scott Surdoval won in West Halls. Jay Tipwell won one of two ARHS positions and Sean Folley and Steve Mezel tied for the second.
In South Halls, presidential hopeful Joseph S. Milazzo II claimed victory over incumbent candidate Robert Zoldos. During Zoldos's administration, the South Halls Residence Association had its constitution revoked due to two-year-old constitutional problems.
The ticket of Marsha Pratt and William Pope won in North Halls, while uncontested candidates Helen Lewandowski and Jane McKnight were elected secretary and treasurer, respectively. Two candidates were elected as ARHS representatives -- Bonnie Fries and James Pisarski. In addition, North's new RHAB representatives included Rick Booth and Kyle Brphy.
The Pollock/Nittany Halls three-candidate battle for president went to incumbent Sherri Shields. Vice presidential candidate Allan Gyorke and treasurer candidate Dawn L. Sowinski, both uncontested, were also elected in that area. Write-in candidate Jean Marisco won the position of secretary. Tim Spila and Brian Lynch, also write-in candidates, were elected as Pollock's ARHS representatives, and Stanley Perkowski and Timothy Weinstein claimed the RHAB slots.
Darryl Bundridge, ARHS elections commissioner, said this year saw an increase in voter turnout. "I would attribute it to the variety in USG tickets -- they met a lot of different needs for a lot of different people."
