The Collegian published an article on March 8 titled "Women students feel discrimination in male-dominated majors," in which chemistry was mentioned. A survey of our current roster at University Park indicates that, in chemistry, 37 percent of our undergraduate majors and 32 percent of our graduate students are women.
This is consistent with the description 'male-dominated major," but is not so unbalanced as the article suggested. Also, I would be very surprised to find any current chemistry textbooks containing gender-specific language of the kind mentioned in the article, all publishers that I know of take great care to avoid a sexist tone.
