Collegian to select new business manager tonight

Collegian Staff Writer

The Daily Collegian's new business manager will be selected tonight by the Collegian Inc.'s Board of Directors. The board will conduct 20-minute interviews with each applicant and then move to closed session for deliberation.

This year's candidates are Heather L. King (sophomore-labor and industrial relations), who currently serves as office manager, member of the Board of Managers and member of the Credit Committee; and Ty David Strohl (junior-broadcast cable), who currently serves as sales manager, member of the Board of Managers and member of the Credit Committee.

Anyone who has been on the Collegian's business staff for at least one semester was eligible to apply for the position of business manager, said Collegian Editor Diane Davis, also a member of the Board of Directors. According to the Collegian's Executive Selection Policy, candidates must submit a cover letter, resume, transcript and proposal outlining the candidate's "aspirations, goals, changes, continuations, and improvements" for the next year.

Rosa Eberly, president of the Board of Directors, said the board will look for an applicant who has experience in all parts of the business side of the Collegian. The board will also look at applicants' individual strengths.

"As always, I'm impressed by the quality and dedication of this year's applicants," Eberly said.

The new business manager will serve a one-year term beginning April 27 and including the University's summer session. Both the editor and business manager are prohibited from holding employment during their tenure, according to executive selection policy.

The business manager oversees the entire business division, including accounting, marketing, advertising, sales, marketing and layout of ads, Davis said.

Current Business Manager Jennifer Grimm was not available for comment.

"The board will look for someone who is a motivator, who is dedicated, who has a good sense of what has worked and what hasn't worked in the past," Davis said.

The Board of Directors has 11 voting members who include faculty members, community members, University students, the Collegian editor and business manager, and one non-voting member -- the general manager of Collegian Inc.
