Celebrity Kidnapping to help supply food bank

Collegian Staff Writer

Organizers of the Phi Mu Delta/Sigma Sigma Sigma Celebrity Kidnapping hope to raise more than 10 tons of food this year for the Food Bank of State College Area Christian Mission -- four tons more than last year.

Phi Mu Delta fraternity, 500 S. Allen St., will kidnap athletes and the presidents of most fraternities and sororities tomorrow, said Steve Dail, the event's philanthropy chairman.

Kidnapped individuals will be freed after their organization brings a ransom of canned goods, Dail said. Individuals will be freed even if their group does not bring a lot of cans.

"The kidnapping is not an event that raises money, but it is still important because it gives something more tangible that helps people immediately," he said.

During the event, a contest is held to see what Greek organizations donates the most canned goods, Dail said.

The groups that donate the most cans will receive prizes varying from discounts at tanning salons to free local band performances, said Sherlyn Accorsi, philanthropy chairperson for Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, 3 Stone.

Last year Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and Delta Tau Delta fraternity, 429 E. Hamilton Avenue, won first place in their categories, Dail said.

"There is good competition among the different groups to see who is going to donate the most cans," he said.

The celebrity kidnap comes at a convenient time for the food bank since most people donate food in the winter, causing supplies to dwindle by spring, said Laurie Goetz, coordinator of the food bank, 208 W. Foster Ave.

The band "Modern Day Pharaohs" will perform during the event, Accorsi said.

Accorsi said she expects most fraternities and sororities to participate.

A few days before the event members of the Phi Mu Delta fraternity and the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority stand outside various local food stores asking for donations of money or canned goods, Dail said.
