Student talent show features performers of all classes

Collegian Arts Writer

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages, please direct your attention to center stage. Performing tonight for your viewing pleasure in an incredible display of bravery and talents, entertainers will astound and amaze you with song, dance and comedy.

Tomorrow night in Schwab Auditorium, the Penn State Alumni Association and the Penn State Thespians will present SYNERGY'90, a class talent show.

The show features 18 acts comprised of students from each class, said director and producer William Miller. The acts are broken down into class categories featuring three acts each from freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduates, Miller said. The show will also have three cross-class acts.

The performance will consist of various types of acts, including vocal numbers, comic skits, dramatic interpretations, instrumentals and dance, Miller said.

Some of the acts are: a dramatic interpretation of "All I Ask of You" from The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber, an instrumental of "Rootbeer Rag" by Billy Joel, a vocal performance of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" from Evita by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and a dance number to "the Finer Things" by Steve Winwood and Will Jennings.

Penn State Thespians, the co-sponsors of the show, will have members working backstage and behind the scenes as stage managers and crew members, said Molly Rodriguez (senior-film), a member of Thespians.

Deborah Damp (sophomore-theater), last year's second runner-up, returns to the SYNERGY stage to perform a dramatic interpretation of "Just You Wait, Henry Higgins" from My Fair Lady, by Alan Lerner and Frederick Loewe.

"This year I'm not in it to win. I'm just going out to have fun. It's nice to be able to do something you love to do," Damp said.

The show is divided into two main acts with an intermission, with nine acts in each half. Centre Dimensions, the student jazz ensemble, will play music throughout the show.

After the opening number by Centre Dimensions, a master of ceremonies will come out to warm up the audience.

"That's me. Your cheesy emcee," said Bill Mulvey (senior-theater), who will perform the master of ceremonies' duties.

"I'll be coming out in the beginning and doing a comedy act. I've never done this before, so I'm looking forward to it with nervous expectation," Mulvey said.

"My job is to provide interplay between the acts and the audience. And I gotta please everyone," he said.

The show will last slightly more than two hours, said Miller. Each act will be limited to no more than five minutes.

"With so many acts, we can't have them any longer than five minutes," Miller said.

During the show, a panel of judges will evaluate each participants performance, Miller said. Between acts, a runner will take the judges' evaluation sheets back to a computer room where the scores will be entered into the computer, Miller said.

"At the end of the show, we punch a button and we have our winner," Miller said.

After the judges' evaluations have been tallied, nine winners will be selected, Miller said. They will include one winner from each class category and three overall winners: a second runner-up, a first runner-up, and an overall winner, Miller said. Each winner will receive cash prizes.

At one point during the show, a student member in the audience will receive a free theater weekend for two in New York City compliments of MBNA.

SYNERGY'90 will take place at 8 pm tomorrow night in Schwab Auditorium. Students with Penn State Visa cards or proof of application for a Penn State Visa Card will be admitted free. Adult admission is $3 per person.
