About basketball
I would like to address some present controversial subjects of basketball here at Penn State in its two forms, men's and women's. First, congratulations to the women's team on its fine season and the Atlantic 10 crown. I enjoyed watching a well-coached team, but I feel Tanya Garner was wrongfully let off the All-Atlantic 10 first team. Second, I feel Rene Portland is correct in saying that it is unfair that her team was not able to use Rec Hall for its first round in the NCAA Tournament. It came down to money, and unfortunately the women were on the wrong end of the stick. If the University wanted to increase revenue, why didn't it schedule a post-season doubleheader? A doubleheader would probably generate more revenue than a single game. Congratulations are also in order to the men's team on another 20-win season. They are a NCAA Tournament caliber team, but unfortunately the selection process omitted the Lions from the field of 64. I am disturbed, however, at some of the comments made by Bruce Parkhill at the end of the season. First, he was very callous to Rene Portland's comments on the availability of Rec Hall when he should have at least acknowledged the comments. Second, he accused Notre Dame, which I feel was wrongly admitted to the tournament, of tailoring its schedule for a 20-win season. While Notre Dame was playing Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Missouri and DePaul (twice), we were busy making quick work of Vermont, George Mason, Juniata and Lehigh. Also, if Notre Dame was not admitted, the Lions wouldn't necessarily be next in line. DePaul and Maryland deserve bids as much as the Lions. Last, he complained that certain teams made the tournament despite having losing records in their respective conferences. Indiana, a prime example, was 8-10 in the Big Ten, but they did not lose outside the conference, and the Big Ten is a very strong conference (they placed seven teams in the tournament). All of Coach Parkhill's comments were both unprofessional and unnecessary. In closing, I would like to wish good luck to both teams in their respective tournaments. Hopefully, the women will prove worthy of their A-10 championship and the men will prove they belong in the field of 64.
