WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Supreme Court's influence in national affairs will not diminish in upcoming years even though the court will be hearing fewer cases, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor said during a meeting with several University students in her chambers during Spring Break.
 
As Undergraduate Student Government presidential and vice presidential candidates campaign furiously, hundreds of behind-the-scenes campaign staffers use their creativity to put the hopefuls in the best light.
 
With Undergraduate Student Government elections less than a week away, candidates on the campaign trail are employing everything from traditional buttons to electronic bulletin boards and a promise to preach from an on-campus soapbox.
 
The improved relationship between news media and news makers has led to a decrease of bias in news reporting, said Steve Bell, anchorman at KYW-TV in Philadelphia, last night in the HUB.

SPORTS
 
With controversy swirling around it, the men's basketball team begins the National Invitation Tournament at 7:30 tonight in Rec Hall. The first-round game with Marquette will be nationally televised by ESPN.
 
Jane Kleiderlein, Denise Sonntag, Kristin Lilly, Fran McDermid, Jill Fretz and Amy Schmidt will represent the women's swimming and diving team today through Friday at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas.
 
Both teams have young lineups, and both felt they would be playing somewhere else -- the women's basketball team at home and Florida State on the road.
 
Forget that the women's basketball team won its first Atlantic 10 championship since 1986. Forget the celebration after defeating rival St. Joseph's. All that would not have happened if it weren't for Tanya Garner.
 
Talk about reloading. Nine seniors, two acclaimed goalies, five starters and a head coach aren't returning. With this in mind, the women's lacrosse team very well could be labeled, for the first time in years, as not THE favorites.
