Give more credit
I am writing in reference to the articles done by the Collegian covering Dance Marathon (Feb. 19). I find it terribly disappointing that your coverage almost completely overlooked the greek organizations involved in the marathon. Considering this collegiate philanthropy is the largest in the country, one would assume that due credit would be given to those who raise over half of the total. More specifically, I would expect the top three organizations to receive more recognition than you seem willing to give them. In your Monday issue, after the marathon, there was mention of the top fund raisers, Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, who raised over $140,000, but they have, in fact, won for the past seven years in a row, not the past two. You completely disregarded the fraternities and sororities that placed second and third, namely Pi Kappa Phi and Alpha Chi Omega who raised more than $130,000 and Kappa Delta Rho and Delta Delta Delta who raised over $77,000. I don't believe people realized how hard these groups work for this cause. The very least a member does is "can" for children with cancer for three weeks every Spring Semester. An entire month is spent preparing and roadtripping around the state and country. Every weekend and usually several weekdays, are spent at intersections collecting money. Usually despite the weather. I know everyone works hard and I am not asking that all credit go to the greek community. Please consider though, that the event is possible due to the Inter-Fraternity and Panhellenic Councils and the majority of greek involvement. There is no need to emphasize greek participation, but they work so hard for the kids that they deserve some appreciation and respect. We must live in a pathetic community if something as trivial as the "HUB Rats" becomes front-page news while organizations setting national records in fundraising are neglected. As "journalists," you have been given the opportunity to influence and persuade people. You have abused this power in that you attack the greek community at every possible moment, yet ignore their admirable accomplishments. I think they deserve some respect and our thanks for their sacrifice and devotion to these children they've had a chance to get close to and care about.
