Waken deaf ears
The anger, disappointment and sense of betrayal expressed by Coach Portland speaks not just for the women of the Penn State community. She also speaks for many men. The status accorded the NCAA tournament should far outweigh any benefit, financial or otherwise, that would accrue to the University by the NIT. The women's basketball team is competing to be number one in the nation; the men's, number 65. If the University is supposed to be an educational institution, one has to wonder just what value has been taught by such a stupid decision. This decision indicates that women are still considered to be second class citizens of the University. Across our nation, women are struggling to get equal pay for equal work. Nuts, at Penn State women obviously have to fight for equal recognition for superior work! Sure, the athletic department says that the NIT pays better than the women's NCAA: so for a paltry few thousand dollars we sell our women down the creek? Welcome to Neanderthal U! When Wednesday night comes, and the two programs are playing simultaneously, may the Lady Lions roar so loud that even the deaf ears in University Park will finally wake and listen.
