Women deserve court

Why would a fairly high-seeded NCAA basketball team be ousted from their home court for an NIT basketball team (notice the difference in the acronyms and their respected collegiate and social importance)?

Because of money, the NIT team would bring more money to the University than the NCAA team, and institutionalized sexism, the NIT team is entirely constructed of men.

I know I've aggravated many men with this first paragraph, but fact is fact, the women's team had a better season with more top-notch competition and is deservedly ranked much higher than the men's team.

This year's women's "Dream Season" was their best in at least a half-dozen years. These young ladies have worked so incredibly hard to make it back on top by earning a home-court advantage in the NCAA playoffs and once again being considered as one of the best teams in the country.

The players did it for themselves, Rene Portland and maybe most of all for the jersey that they wore.

How does the University show its gratitude? By exhibiting it doesn't give a damn about what is right and what is wrong, but rather, that it will go to any means in search of the almighty, immortal buck.

It sounds utterly immoral and absolutely evil doesn't it? Well it is.

I don't know, maybe I am going just a bit too far right now with overrunning emotion, but there is definitely one thing that makes no sense to me at all -- why didn't the University and athletic director make or, worse yet, even try to make arrangements with the NCAA to change the women's game to a different time or use a nearby facility (Harrisburg, Hershey, Johnstown, Altoona).

The evidence sure indicates the University did absolutely nothing for the women's team and implies it said something on the order of "So what, you girls can go to Tallahassee."

I do congratulate the men's team for a good season (probably the best in men's modern basketball history at PSU). They deserve to host an NIT playoff game at Rec Hall, but not in total replacement of the women's game.

And in no way does the women's team deserve to play an NCAA playoff game at Florida State. The University, however, doesn't agree with that or else it would have at least devoted some effort and time to arrange an alternative or, better yet, do the right thing.

Well, I guess this is what we should expect from a 19th century equal opportunity university.

Thank you, Penn State. Because of your blatant greed and outright discrimination, myself and hundreds of other students will never have the chance to see and root for Penn State at a NCAA Tournament basketball game.
