Just an expression

I am writing this letter in regards to several recent letters concerning the March 7 (Daily Collegian) article titled "Seven vie for presidential appointment," wherein Mr. Lloyd Huck, in an act of malice and hatred, used the expression "number two man."

Through this statement, Mr. Huck obviously intends to exclude women from consideration, and in fact, means to imply that women are not capable of maintaining important social positions, and are nothing more than biological units created for the purpose of serving man -- right? GET REAL!

The expression "number two man" is just that -- an expression. Since this particular expression seems to be discriminatory, why not, then, complain about the many other obviously segregal expressions and words which are used today?

For example, why not lobby to have the international boating code change the expression "man overboard" to "man/woman overboard;" or have Webster change the following: "manhandle" to "man/womanhandle," "mankind" to "man/womankind," or "humanity" to "human/woman-ity;" or finally, make men's rooms into men's/women's rooms (since it is obviously a distinction made to prevent women from reaping the wonderful rewards found only in men's bathrooms)?

I will be among the first to admit that sexual discrimination exists, and, in many cases, is a problem; but I also must humble myself to reality when someone uses a harmless expression which, most likely, predates the U.S. Constitution.

All I ask is that those of you who find malice in such remarks take a little time out to try and understand the context in which they are used, and to realize that most of "us guys" are not there to "get" you.
