After two hours of discussion last night, the Lesbian and Gay Student Alliance decided to endorse Brad Haartz and Doug DeLong in the upcoming Undergraduate Student Government presidential election.
In a prepared statement, LGSA members said they will support Haartz and DeLong because of their "pro-active commitment to minority concerns in the past, most notably their participation in the Coalition for Human Relations."
The organization also cited Haartz' experience as LGSA liaison to USG and work in the state legislature on behalf of the University community. LGSA members said they were impressed by the ticket's plans to revitalize the unified minority spirit of the past.
"His positions most closely parallel LGSA's organizational goals," said member Michael LaFlam.
"It was really hard," said member Brian McKernan."We felt there was more than one qualified candidate and we had to chose someone we felt comfortable with on all aspects."
Prior to endorsements, five of the seven USG tickets attended an hour-long question and answer session.
During the meeting, Haartz said he would revitalize the defunct USG Department of Human Relations to unify various minority groups on campus to accomplish these and other goals.
