NAACP nominates officer candidates

Collegian Staff Writer

The University chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People last night nominated officer and committee chairperson candidates for next fall.

Joe Mincer (junior-quantitative business analysis) -- originally a vice presidential candidate -- became the only presidential nominee after switching nominations with Director of Minority Recruitment and Retention Gary Kelsey.

While he would serve as president if needed, Kelsey said he would like to see a student hold the office.

"This is an excellent position for students to gain experience and it's an important organization," he said. Kelsey and Vanessa Wright, current chairwoman of the Community Action Committee, are vice presidential candidates.

Current President Elizabeth Walker declined a nomination to continue in that office because she will graduate in December.

Dinetta Groce (junior-health policy and analysis) was nominated for secretary. Although he was not present to accept, treasurer Chris Johnson (junior-labor policy and analysis) was nominated to continue in that position.

Candidates were also nominated to head committees within NAACP.

Elections will be held March 26, after speeches by each candidate.

Those not nominated but still wishing to run for a position may speak as write-in candidates on election night, Walker said. All candidates must submit a paragraph to NAACP, explaining why they wish to run.

In other business, Walker said plans for Spike Lee's April 8 visit have not yet been finalized.

The director of last summer's Do The Right Thing has committed to two speaking engagements, one of which will take place at the chapter's annual Achievement Awards Banquet that evening at the Days Inn, 240 S. Pugh St., she said. However, details about an earlier speech are not known, she added.

Tickets for the banquet will cost $12 for students and $15 for faculty. NAACP members may purchase tickets from 2 to 6 p.m. March 17 and 18 in the group's office in 116 Warnock Commons.

Non-members may purchase tickets from 2 to 5 p.m. March 19-23 in the NAACP office. There will be a two-ticket limit.
