Early Saturday morning 160 students lined up on Pugh Street to get a little studying done. But it wasn't the usual mish-mash of biology, English or mechanical engineering on these bright pupils' minds.
 
With the punch of a computer keyboard last spring, University student James Whitehead brought a hotly debated national issue to center stage at Penn State.
 
Undergraduate Student Government presidential candidates at last night's debate stressed the importance of establishing a good relationship with the new University administration.
 
In the last open forum before the Faculty Senate votes to make cultural diversity courses mandatory, students and faculty may attend a University-wide teleconference from 2 to 4 p.m. today in 112 Kern.

For the first time since 1984, the Penn State Lion Ambassadors hosted an annual weekend-long alumni association conference, bringing together student delegations to address ways to further alumni relations and maintain alumni interest.
 
BELLEFONTE -- Centre County's election board will decide tomorrow whether to let voters have a crack at putting in their two cents on whether Ray Gricar should become a full-time district attorney.
 
University President Bryce Jordan publicly endorsed the Campaign for a Safer Penn State Friday, praising a week of safety programs sponsored by the Undergraduate Student Government Department of Safety until Saturday.
 
 
SPORTS
 
The women's tennis team started its home spring season with a blast, shutting out both Cornell and St. Bonaventure with scores of 9-0 at the Penn State Tennis Club.
 
A standing room only crowd in the South Gym said goodbye to three senior volleyball players before their last Rec Hall competition Friday night.
 
Guillo Silva had 16 kills and Jorge Perez added 12 as the men's volleyball team pounded East Stroudsburg on Friday night in Rec Hall, 15-6, 15-8, 15-4.
 
Coach Mary Kennedy has said the depth of the men's golf team will allow her to make changes in the lineup if the need would arise.
 
After playing in central Florida last week, the women's golf team will again compete in the Sunshine State in Rollins College's 15th annual Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational against 20 teams.
 
Saturday the men's lacrosse team met one of its toughest challenges of the early season and was smacked in the face with a 17-6 loss to Hofstra.
 
BLOOMSBURG -- John Yankanich, a fifth-year senior, seemed destined to vanish into obscurity after wrestling season.
 
The golden bubble of NCAA dreams burst for the men's basketball team last night, only to be replaced with a new quest.
 
Senior Stacy Prey had a dream weekend when she became an All-American for the first time in track, placing fourth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday evening.
 
During the regular season, center Kathy Phillips averaged 10.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
 
BLOOMSBURG -- Penn State became the first Eastern Wrestling League team to advance its full squad to the NCAA tournament this weekend as it upset West Virginia and Bloomsburg to win the EWL title.
 
With a 64'4½" toss, shot putter C.J. Hunter placed second at the NCAA Championships, earned All-America status, set a new Penn State record and tossed a lifetime best over the weekend in Indianapolis.
 
The bench was at the other end of the court, the uniforms were blue and other fans were cheering for other teams. But one thing stayed the same -- the women's basketball team still won in Rec Hall.
 
Using a balanced attack from players young and new, the women's lacrosse team opened its season in defense of its national title with a comfortable 11-3 win over Richmond on yesterday afternoon.
 
The euphoria of winning the Atlantic 10 championship was dampened yesterday when the women's basketball team learned it will not play at home in the first round of the NCAA tournament because of a scheduling conflict with the NIT-bound men's team.
 
Jamie Downer knew the men's gymnastics team did something special yesterday when Coach Karl Schier told him he had practice off today.
 
For the second time this season, a gymnast injured herself in the warmup before a meet, but that did not stop the women's gymnastics team from hitting its highest score while defeating New Hampshire, 189.45-185.40, yesterday.
 
It would have been the perfect season. The ice hockey club regains the title to their own Nittany Lion Invitational, seizes the National Invitational Tournament Championship after declining a bid last year, and then finishes the triple crown by winning the ICHL championship for the second year in a row -- and it almost happened.
