The women's tennis team started its home spring season with a blast, shutting out both Cornell and St. Bonaventure with scores of 9-0 at the Penn State Tennis Club.
Everything went the Lady Lions' way -- none of the matches went into three sets.
The team established a firm grip on the lead against Cornell on Saturday and never let go, as the Lady Lions swept the doubles matches. No. 1 Kelly Erven and Claudia Karabedian beat Jennifer Demsey and Dolly Chugh, 6-0, 6-1. No. 2 Lisa Thomas and Kerri Kohr defeated Jen Kenas and Judy Beckenbach, 6-1, 7-5. Thomas and Kohr rebounded from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to pull out the win.
No. 3 Kathy Kissel and Jennifer Farrington finished the sweep with a win over Carol Katz and Aimsley Haffner, 6-0, 6-3.
The tone established by the doubles continued into the singles. No. 1 Erven beat Demsey, 6-2, 6-0. No. 2 Karabedian then defeated Kenas, 6-2, 6-3.
No. 3 Thomas received another scare when she had to recover from 4-1 in the second set for a 6-2, 6-4 win over Beckenbach, but it didn't faze her.
"I'm kind of used to that -- it happens to me a lot," Thomas said. "I knew I was still in the match, that I could come back. I was just trying to do it one game at a time."
No. 4 Kissel continued the streak, beating Chugh, 6-3, 6-1. No. 5 Furrington sailed past Katz, 6-0, 6-2, and No. 6 Kohr completed the sweep, blanking Seema Shah, 6-0, 6-0.
The Lady Lions handled St. Bonaventure just as handily. No. 1 Kissel fought out a 6-4, 6-2 win over Dawn Brownile. No. 2 Farrington slammed the door on the Bonnies' Chris Cirrito, 6-0, 6-2. No. 3 Kohr added another shutout to her record, beating Kim Gabelman, 6-0, 6-0.
No. 4 Stephanie Erb gave the Lady Lions another shutout, with Amy Streibel the victim this time. No. 5 Denise Robinson repelled Amy Kornicsak and No. 6 Carolyn Pickering breezed past Debbie Raul, both with scores of 6-0, 6-2.
Penn State already had the win in hand as the action moved into doubles. No. 1 Erven and Karabedian smashed Brownlie and Cirrito, 6-0, 6-1. No. 2 Thomas and Jamie Peters followed suit, defeating Gabelman and Raul by the same score.
No. 3 Kellie Flanagan and Kathy Gringol put the finishing touches on the Lady Lions' perfect weekend as they came out on top of Streibel and Amy Kornsak in a 6-2, 6-4 clash.
