Mann, Prey seek All-American status

Seniors Carmen Mann and Stacy Prey will have to turn in their best performances of the season this weekend in Indianapolis at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships to gain All-American status.

Mann, an All-American last year in the outdoor triple jump, automatically qualified for nationals in both the triple and long jumps at the Lady Lion Classic Jan. 20. She broke two school records at that meet with 41' 5 3/4" in the triple and 20' 7 1/2" in the long.

Though Mann won the long jump at the ECAC championships last weekend, her confidence was shaken when she failed to place in the triple. But both she and assistant coach Robyne Johnson, believe she made the necessary technical corrections in practice this week.

"She got it together and saw the little things she was doing wrong," Johnson said.

Mann estimated that she will have to jump well over 41' in the triple and 20' in the long to place in the top six for All-American status.

"If I jump as well this weekend as I did at practice, then maybe . . ." Mann said. "But that's a capital 'IF.' "

Prey, an All-American in cross country, wants the honor for the first time in track. The 5,000-meter specialist said she would have to shave 12 to 22 seconds off her career best and qualifying mark of 16:22.88, to place in the top six.

Seeded seventh for the meet, Prey was nervous because she was forced to take time off to rest a lingering groin injury. Last weekend at the ECAC championships, she placed third in the 5,000 with 16:30.46.
