Hoping to raise $5,000 for a local community center, Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity, 328 E. Foster Avenue, and Sigma Alpha sorority will hold their second Sports Trivia Bowl this weekend.
Five-person teams from fraternity, sorority and independent groups will compete in the event, which serves as the fraternity's philanthropy, said Promotion Chairman Steven Burns.
Registration will be held in the HUB basement and costs $30 per team. Today is the last day for interested parties to register.
Two teams will compete for five rounds, answering a variety of trivia questions for all sports, Burns said. The first question will be open to both teams, and afterward, on an alternating basis.
Both teams will have an opportunity to answer in a speed round and random prizes will be awarded for correct responses.
The four teams accumulating the most points for correct answers will compete in the semi-finals, he said. The two losing teams will play for third place and the two winning teams will play for the championship.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to Centre County's Office of Aging, which assists senior citizens who live independently in the community and at home, Burns said.
The office offers several services such as a home-delivered meal program, in-home personal care, transportation services and case-work visits as an alternative to nursing homes for elderly in the area, said Jane Taylor, the agency's case work supervisor.
She said last year's contributions were allocated toward these programs and five county centers for senior citizens. The centers, she said, offer senior citizens a place to socialize and be educated as well as have a hot meal.
Last year's Trivia Bowl raised $1,000, said last year's promotion chairman Barry Snyder.
"It was our first year running it and I don't think we promoted it as well as we could have," Snyder said.
With new approaches, the goal this year is $5,000, he said.
Improvements initiated to reach this year's goal include increasing the number of entering teams and extending the length of the event to two days, Burns said. A radio remote from station WQWK 98 is planned and a 550 ATX mountain bike from New Age Sports, 229 S. Allen St., will be raffled off.
Burns said the winning fraternity prize will be a hot tub rental from Tubs To Go, 1815 Weaver, and the top sorority will receive a $150 ice cream social from Baskin-Robbins, 358 E. College Ave. The independent prize will be a party at Nittany Hot Springs, 511 E. Calder Way.
T-shirts donated by Anheuser Busch will be given to everyone who registers, and prizes will randomly be given away for correct answers.
As of now, the event will take place in the fraternity's house, but Burns said he is looking for a residence hall area to hold it in. He said it is open to the public.
"I would like to see it become an established philanthropy," Snyder said.
