State Rep. Lynn B. Herman, R-Philipsburg, will attack Gov. Robert P. Casey's budget proposal at a town meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in the HUB Fishbowl.
Herman, who is running for his fifth consecutive term, said the meeting will focus on Casey's budget, which he called deficient in providing funds for the University.
"I think that his recent budget proposal is seriously deficient in many areas, and if passed, would seriously hurt several programs vital to the economy and well-being of residents in my district," he said.
"Rep. Herman will be discussing Gov. Casey's proposed 1990-91 budget and its potential impact on the Centre Region, especially higher education, Penn State University and college students," according to a prepared statement from Herman.
He will also discuss legislation he is sponsoring, including a bill that would allow financially eligible fifth-year college students to receive aid from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. Undergraduate students now can only receive PHEAA funds for four years.
State College Borough Councilwoman Jean McManis is running for Herman's seat in the 77th district, on the Democratic ticket. The district includes State College, Ferguson, Halfmoon, Huston, Rush, Taylor and Worth townships and Philipsburg, Port Matilda, Chester Hill and Osceola.
John Souren, president of the College Republicans, said his organization supports Herman on his views of Casey's budget and the financial aid bill.
