NEWS
 
The forecast is glum for area residents who say they already believe the cost of recycling in Centre County is a bunch of garbage.
 
Gearing up for what may be his fifth term in the state House, Rep. Lynn Herman, R-Philipsburg, has formally announced his re-election campaign for the 77th district seat.
 
The Association of Residence Hall Students last night elected Vice President Melissa Pressler as its new president for the 1990-91 school year.
 
Seven presidential and vice-presidential candidates -- the largest number to run in the past decade except for 1987 officially declared their candidacy yesterday for the Undergraduate Student Government.
 
Controversial film maker Spike Lee, noted for last summer's movie Do the Right Thing and for raising national awareness of racial issues, will visit the University next month.
 
The Lesbian and Gay Student Alliance nominated members to fill four of five available positions last night.
 
University President Bryce Jordan will speak to the Graduate Student Association at 7:15 tonight in 101 Kern.
 
Two University employees and one Penn State student are under investigation for alleged thefts of money and equipment from the plant pathology and poultry science departments, a University Police services officer said.
 
 
SPORTS
 
Despite adverse weather and poor course conditions, the men's golf team finished fifth in the Woodyard-Hungarland Intercollegiate Tournament Thursday and Friday in Huntington, Texas.
 
Looking for its second straight title, the women's track team placed a disappointing fifth with 41 points at the ECAC indoor championships at the Boston University this past weekend.
 
The women's fencing team qualified for the NCAA Championships by placing second in last Saturday's Mid-Atlantic South Regional Championships. The top four teams from the event qualified for NCAAs, March 24-28 at Notre Dame.
 
PHILADELPHIA -- Making it to college basketball's big dance requires good footwork. Unfortunately for the men's basketball team, it shot its own foot last night in a 64-59 loss to Massachusetts in the Atlantic 10 Tournament semifinals.
 
The women's swimming and diving team gladly accepted the Ellen Perry Cup for finishing first at the Eastern Seaboard Championships.
 
Strong team diving and a relay team which qualified for the NCAA Championships led the men's swimming team in the final day of competition as it scored 517.5 points and finished second behind Princeton (528) at the 50th annual Eastern Seaboard Championships.
 
Shot putter C.J. Hunter and distance runner Steve Brown won their events at the IC4A Championships to lead the Lions to a second place finish.
