Animal rights lecture
The status of the Animal Rights movement at Penn State was partially documented in the Feb. 15 issue of the Collegian. To help complete this review, I would like to announce that on March 19 the Penn State Objectivist Club will be sponsoring a guest lecturer, Dr. Edwin Locke from the University of Maryland. The title of his speech will be "The Case Against Animal Rights." The Collegian quotes Miss Miller, president of the Alliance for Animal Rights, as stating that the University has no cause for concern over the actions of her organization. In the context of the article she may be correct, but at an early semester meeting, when pressed and asked to elaborate on the goals of AAR and its members, the real threat was made very clear. Because its members have already, albeit incorrectly, attributed the concept of rights as applicable to animals the lack of violence on the part of AAR to "free" animals used for clothing, research, testing, etc., comes by the grace of an inconsistent application of their beliefs rather than a moral limitation. Dr. Locke will be discussing the intellectual fallacies propagated by animal rights advocates and the dangers of granting them their primacy premise: that mankind has absolutely no moral basis for the use of animals for any purpose whatsoever, regardless of how they are treated. Everyone is invited to attend Dr. Locke's speech. Those working and studying in fields directly affected by this movement are urged to attend.
