LGSA names candidates to fill offices

The Lesbian and Gay Student Alliance nominated members to fill four of five available positions last night.

Members nominated current political co-director Lora Nace to continue in the position, and Michael Mobley will run for the other co-director position.

Dean Cerato was nominated to continue as treasurer, and Lisa Allgood was nominated to continue as social and educational co-director.

LGSA will elect two political co-directors, two educational and social co-directors and a treasurer at 8:30 next Monday night during its social meeting. Nominations will be accepted at the LGSA office in 224 HUB until Friday.

In other business, member Chris Goffredo discussed the Northeast Lesbian and Gay Student Union Conference, which he and two other students attended Feb. 23 to 25. About 1,000 students from universities in the northeast attended.

Goffredo reported strategies other universities used for working with faculty and administration to develop and expand services for gay and lesbian students. Many of these universities have sexual orientation clauses in their non-discriminatory policies unlike Penn State, said adviser Lisa Henderson.

The lack of a sexual orientation clause in the University's non-discrimination policy could hinder LGSA's efforts to get more faculty members involved in creating and expanding services for gay and lesbian students, Henderson said.

"Many faculty members have powerful reasons for not being out, like losing their jobs," she said.

The group also discussed developing a video to document harassment of gay and lesbian students and scheduling a meeting to meet candidates for the Undergraduate Student Government elections.
