Office Olympix to raise funds for Easter Seals

Collegian Staff Writer

While the University community just completed its most successful philanthropy -- the Interfraternity/Panhellenic Council Dance Marathon -- the Easter Seals Society of Centre-Clinton County is preparing to launch its own benefit for area children.

On Feb. 28, the Easter Seals Society in State College will hold its Second Annual Office Olympix at the Days Inn Penn State, 240 S. Pugh St.

The Office Olympix is a competition among businesses in which teams of five members compete in five events, including the 5 o'clock dash, floppy disc(us) throw, coffee slalom run, wastebasketball and the rubberband archery snap.

The 5 o'clock dash has employees racing to type the last memo of the day, clear their desk, grab their coats and sign out. At the coffee slalom run, workers carry three cups of water through an office obstacle course, making sure to stop by the mailroom on the way.

Trophies will be awarded to individuals and teams for their performance and the amount of money raised.

The idea for the Olympix originated from a similar benefit held by the Blair County Easter Seals and was adopted here last year, said Karen Bower, a receptionist at the Easter Seals office.

Last year, nine teams raised more than $3,000. This year, the society expects a similar turnout, she said.

The Office Olympix was set up in State College by Ann Guss, member and treasurer of the Board of Easter Seals of Centre-Clinton County. Event sponsors include Nittany Office Equipment, 1207 S. Atherton St., WMAJ Radio, 421 E. Beaver Ave., and Days Inn Penn State.

Teams entering must recruit sponsors and collect at least $150 total to participate. All money is raised for Easter Seals, which will help set up day care and preschool for three- to five- year-olds within the counties.

The event kicks off with pre-registration at 6:30 p.m. and the games will begin at 7 p.m.
