BELLEFONTE -- All charges against a State College man who allegedly tried to stab his roommate after an argument last Thursday were bound over for trial yesterday afternoon in Centre County Court.
District Justice Robert Shoff ordered Robert E. McMillan Jr., 23, 1005 N. Atherton St., to stand trial for charges of criminal attempted homicide, aggravated assault and terroristic threats because he reportedly tried to stab Rickey Poe, one of his roommates, with a kitchen knife.
Under questioning from the prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Karen Arnold, Poe testified that the knife attack started after an argument. Poe, who has known McMillan since the two were children, said that for several days McMillan "would get drunk and accuse me of taking his money."
Poe testified that McMillan had been drinking the night of Feb. 15 before the argument began. "I actually saw him consume eight, maybe 10 beers."
A fist fight began shortly after 11 p.m., when several of Poe's attempts to end the argument failed, he said. Poe testified they hit each other about four times.
Poe said he went upstairs for a wet washcloth to cover McMillan's bleeding facial wounds and came back downstairs.
"I was trying to keep tabs on him and I was afraid he might go off on one of the other two people in the house," Poe said when cross-examined by defense attorney Deborah Lux, as to why he returned to McMillan.
Poe returned upstairs and when he came back several minutes later, McMillan was standing by the fireplace with what he described as a "10- to 12-inch kitchen knife with a bright, serrated edge." McMillan allegedly stood with the knife raised as high as his head, pointing at Poe.
"He grabbed me and held me so that the serrated edge of the knife was up against the left side of my neck," Poe said.
Poe testified he dialed for the police but McMillan cut the telephone cord.
Despite McMillan's actions, Poe said he thought McMillan "was still on one of his little drunken rampages" and that McMillan would not hurt him.
The alleged attack briefly stopped when McMillan admitted he was behaving "stupid" and tried to break the knife, Poe said.
Shorty after, McMillan reportedly held the knife over his head and lunged at Poe, who was now sitting on the couch.
Poe testified that he grabbed McMillan by the wrists, but McMillan did not drop the knife. Poe said he felt McMillan relax and let him go. When he did, McMillan stabbed him through the left hand between the index finger and thumb, Poe said.
State College Bureau of Police Services officer Steve Bosack said that after he read McMillan his Miranda rights, McMillan made several spontaneous statements including, "He deserved it," "I really took a chunk out of him," and "If I go to jail he's going to pay for it."
