Grads don't want plus/minus grading system

Representatives from the Graduate Student Association will recommend that the University not implement the plus/minus system for graduate students at the Graduate Council meeting at 3:30 p.m. today in 101 Kern.

"We couldn't think of any good reasons to implement the system," said Scott Sabol, GSA representative to the council. He said he expects the council to accept the recommendation.

Sabol also said GSA will not suggest a policy revision on doctoral dissertations at the University.

In other business, a panel discussion on the relationships among research, graduate studies, information transfer and economic development will be presented.

With the University building a research park, it is becoming more involved with technological transfer and economic development, said Eunice Askov, professor of education and moderator of the discussion.

"How do graduate studies fit in?" she asked.

Assistant Professor of Business Administration David Allen said his role will focus on the recommendations of the task force formed as part of University President Bryce Jordan's plan to create a more positive business environment at the University.

Allen said the task force made recommendations about three activities relating to the University's role: intellectual property, conflict of interest and commitment, and entrepreneurial activity.

Associate Professor of Education James Fairweather, a participant in the presentation, said he was asked to "come prepared to discuss issues related to industry University partnerships."

Other participants in the discussion include Irwin Feller, professor of economics and director of the institute for policy research and evaluation, and K.J. Yost, associate vice president for research and technology transfer.
