Letter to the Editor
Don't dictate music
This letter is in response to a letter submitted by the AFA, concerning rock music in the dining halls. I have a couple points I would like to make concerning their alternative choices. First of all, since when does the AFA get off dictating to the rest of us what we should or should not listen to where music is concerned (any type)? They have their likes and dislikes in music, like the rest of us, but this does not give them the right to force their beliefs on the rest of the student population. That's what this school is supposed to be all about -- DIVERSITY! Second, didn't these people ever hear of the saying, "Different strokes for different folks?" Apparently not! That's still no excuse for badmouthing another individual's musical tastes. Do we really want this small group of students telling us what types of music ought to be played in the dining halls? I think we can decide for ourselves what types of music we'd feel comfortable with. As to their alternative choices, I myself have been exposed to Christian music and what little bit I've heard I liked. While some may enjoy classical music, it does not share the popularity of rock music. All I can say is, rock music can't be too offensive, because I'm sure the RHAB would have received more complaints than they already have. There has been to my knowledge, three letters written, and one phone call received. This doesn't sound like a majority of the student population to me. My closing thought to the AFA is this: You can't please everybody. Everyone is going to have their individual tastes in music. Again, this diversity of opinion should, and does, not give this small cluster of people any right to force their likes and dislikes on others. I hope the AFA notices this thought, and remembers it before they start enforcing their beliefs on the rest of us. Maybe, instead of choosing musical alternatives for our listening pleasure, they should find better ways to use their free time. This smacks of blatant censorship of the worst kind.
