The festivities may be over, but the marathon continues
Students look toward next year's event

The cancer patients spoke to the crowd, the dancers finally relaxed, the morale committee members could rest their smiles and the grand total of $671,573 was announced.

What next?

After the 1990 Interfraternity/Panhellenic Council Dance Marathon successfully ended Sunday night, the physical plant committee still had to clean, the public relations and advertising committees began planning for next year, the finance committee needed to collect the pledge money and the dancers needed to recover.

"We're still being real happy," said Chris Bannon, overall chairperson. "What we do now is a lot of follow up."

Bannon said immediately following the marathon, 120 people helped clean White Building and moved things back to the HUB for storage.

Yesterday, Frank DiBiasi, public relations and advertising chairperson, was busy sending out press releases to tie up this year's marathon as well as to promote next year's event.

"It helps build some ties and bridges for the following year," he said.

Kim Chester, financial chairperson, said the collection of pledge money will begin after Spring Break and will be completed throughout the rest of the semester. She said she was in awe of the grand total raised by the Marathon.

"I just could not believe it," Chester said. "We thought that we'd maybe break half a million, but to get almost $700,000 was way over our goal."

The first thing that Stacie Rog (junior-English, secondary education) did when the marathon ended was call home. Her parents and sister surprised her with an unexpected visit, but Rog thought it was just an hallucination, she said.

"I didn't recognize them. I thought I was dreaming," she said. "My mom wanted to take me home."

Yesterday, Rog said she thought she was still hallucinating.

"I expected to be tired but not mentally insane," said Rog, who was on the morale committee the previous year. "I hated what it did to my mind. (Next year) I'll put my efforts into some other aspect of the Marathon."

When the Marathon ended, Judine Stoca (junior-elementary education) said she took a shower and had something to eat before falling into a deep sleep.

"I was out," she said. "I don't remember going to sleep, (and) I didn't even dream."

Sunday evening, with swollen legs and fallen arches, Stoca thought that this year's marathon was her last.

"But I woke up this morning and said I'd dance it again," she said.

Jennifer Coyle (junior-marketing) had to have her arches taped twice during the 48 hours. Although her feet were in excruciating pain, she actually enjoyed having the opportunity to sit down while a woman taped her feet, she said.

"I ended up apologizing to this lady like 12 times because of having headbobs," she said.

Coyle said yesterday her body felt fine, but she was still tired and had some difficulty walking.

"The stairs are a bit of a challenge," she said.

During the Marathon, Coyle said she would get low in the early mornings but the last couple of hours were not difficult.

"(In the morning), you feel like you're on the outside looking in, and you're not really there," she said. "But the feeling you get in the last couple of hours . . . the energy level is so much higher. It's just great."

"I feel awesome," said Lauren Rouff (junior-political science), sitting in the Kappa Delta suite, 101 S. Cross Hall. "We're all just sitting here talking about it. We're just trying to figure out how much more money we can raise next year."

Rouff was one dancer who did not sleep immediately after the marathon.

"I kept feeling like I was dancing while I was sleeping, and I kept waking up," she said.
