Graduating students of fine arts display their creative education

Rushing in and out of the HUB during the week, most of us have seen, or at least glanced at, the art displays outside of the Fishbowl. The current exhibit until March 4, the Bachelor of Fine Arts Graduating Seniors Show, features the work of University students.

The exhibit, sponsored by the Art Students League, includes ceramics, photography and paintings on the white panels across from the Fishbowl, a glass case of metalwork by the door, and two sculptures: the Black Box and Sand, and Drip with Drape. All Bachelor of Fine Arts graduates were invited to enter pieces in the show, and most participated.

Isabel Farrell, coordinator of HUB Galleries, said this exhibit is one of the few where students are able to display their work before such a large portion of the student body.

There are three principal, undergraduate fine arts shows annually at Penn State; one sponsored by the University, which can be seen in the Zoller Gallery after spring break, and two sponsored by the Art Students League: one in Chambers during the fall, and the one currently in the HUB.

Marlene Griesbach, who is a senior member of the Art Students League, has two pieces of painted metalwork and a charcoal drawing in the exhibit. She said that she, along with Karen Sankewitsch, Kathleen George and Kathleen Kraus, is responsible for actually collecting the works and putting up the exhibit.

In addition to the student involvement, the exhibit "shows the diversity of the school. It shows some experimental directions people are taking," Griesbach said.

One student who passed by the exhibit particularly noticed the Black Box.

"At first I wasn't sure that it was even art, but upon closer examination I think its very interesting," Aaron Lecoin (senior-English) said. "I think the entire exhibit is interesting. Its like giving you a view of what artists of the 90's are creating."
