Letter to the Editor
Look at music
This letter is in response to (last Monday's) front-page article about the proposed banishment of rock music from the dining halls. First off, Bob Bowen, president of the American Family Association's local chapter (which boasts a whopping five members) said "the lyrics (of rock songs) are totally against what (Christian) people believe in." And because of this he wants the dining halls in the commons to play either classical music, Christian music (whatever the hell that is) or no music at all. I doubt however, that Mr. Bowen has ever heard classical music before. The words of many operas, symphonies and classical "songs" deal specifically with war, murder, incest, poisoning and suicide. Are these Christian values Mr. Bowen? Also, I wonder if Mr. Bowen has considered the popularity of rock music over Christian or classical music on campus. Maybe it's my radio, but I haven't been able to find one radio station which plays Christian music in Happy Valley, while I know at least three stations play rock music. Mr. Bowen complains that rock music gives him a stomachache. So what? There are many things in a democracy which offend people, or upset them. Maybe you shouldn't eat food in the dining halls. And as for the four complaints received by the Residence Hall Advisory board, who cares? In this great country of ours the minority does have rights -- the right to buy earplugs!
