Vary music styles

I knew it would not take long. As soon as I saw the article in the paper about a group of students being offended by some of the music played in the dining halls, I knew there would be some sort of nonsensical response.

Matthew Mock's response (Collegian, Feb. 14) is just that. He goes off on some tangent about sending the Word of God to everyone and playing Christian music in the dining halls. This was not at all the point of the students who complained about this music.

I am not a member of the Penn State chapter of the American Family Association, but I have to agree that I am offended by the selection of music that is played in the dining halls.

I'll agree that some of the lyrics are not to my liking, but my main point is that there is no diversity in the music. Where is the classical, the jazz, the rhythm and blues and maybe some big band?

In a college town where the two main stations give you a selection of either John Cougar Mellencamp or Bob Dylan (not that these men are not good musicians), there should be something else offered to fit the many variety of tastes of people who eat in the dining halls.

As a solution, I would suggest a different type of music each day of the week in the dining hall. Or if that is too difficult, Muzak is an alternative that would give the rock melodies without the lyrics. That would be comfortable for all.

The larger issue behind all of this is how RHAB and, subsequently, the University, is going to respond to this complaint. I hope these students' religious preference does not bar them from getting the treatment they deserve in this case.

The University has a history of trying to remove things that are offensive to some groups on campus. This case is no different and RHAB should try to alleviate the situation as best they can.
