Hitting errors cost spikers, lead to win for Manitoba in four

Collegian Sports Writer

Manitoba, dubbed by some as, "the best volleyball team in North America," benefited from 39 Penn State hitting errors en route to a victory last night at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The final score of the two-hour match was 15-10, 15-13, 11-15, 15-7.

The two teams will meet again at 7:30 tonight in Rec Hall and tomorrow night at Conestoga Valley High School in Lancaster.

"Somebody must have been moving the court on us," Assistant Coach Mark Pavlik said, jokingly. "Generally, we're not going to miss that many swings.

"It just seemed all the sudden somebody tilted the court and we just missed with a couple of balls. The nice thing is we were swinging real aggressive against this tough block and we certainly weren't intimidated by them at all."

Twelve of the Lions' hitting errors during the match came off blocks by Manitoba.

"(Manitoba has) big hitters, consistent passers (and) good diggers," Assistant Coach Bob Titzer said. "We ran a very quick offense, probably one of our better offensive nights of the year. We played as well as we did against (George) Mason (on Wednesday night). We were definitely in the match with them. It was a very close match."

Guillo Silva led Penn State (7-6) with 28 kills, three blocks and two service aces. Charlie Bertran and Jorge Perez added 21 and 16 kills, respectively.

"Their height does play a part," Coach Tom Peterson said. "I thought that we played one of our best if not our best match, (but) there were a just a few times when we're scrambling if we don't get a perfect pass or if we're trying to force things just a little bit too much when height became a factor. Other than that, we were just about even."

Penn State started a lineup of Silva, Perez, and Bertran as outside hitters, Scott Miller at setter and Todd Shirley and Kevin Mosbacher as middle blockers. After the second game, Jim Schall replaced Miller and Tito Nunez and Winfield Evens came in as middle blockers. Nunez finished with five kills and three blocks and Evens added five kills and two blocks.

"I think the nice thing is they came in with the same intensity," Pavlik said. "Win (Evens) did some nice things early in the third game, blocking. Tito picked it up late in the third game and had some key digs, just reacting well to balls off the block."

Notes: Admission will be charged for tonight's match in Rec Hall. Prices will be $3 for adults and $1 for students.
