No homophobia
I felt compelled to address a subject that has been in the news quite often lately. That is the issue of gay rights, specifically here at Penn State. I thought it was time that a heterosexual spoke out against the behavior of homophobics and others. As a Christian I have very deep beliefs about the issue of homosexuality as it applies to a relationship with God. But these beliefs do not prevent me from accepting gays and lesbians and taking part in their fight for basic rights. Being the poor sinner that I am, living under the grace of God, how can I set myself up as a judge over others? But this is what many people try to do. I have read the articles about the frequency of verbal, emotional and physical abuse that homosexuals face on this campus. The abuse even comes from those who call themselves Christian. It grieves me to see hatred wrap itself in my Lord's cross and go merrily on. I am also tired of hearing that old homophobic line,"I don't mind gays as long as they don't flaunt it." This comes from people who feel free to hold hands, kiss or whatever in public. If I can flaunt my sexuality, why can't a homosexual? I think it is time that we heterosexuals realize sexuality is a prime motivator of our actions and that homosexuals deserve the same liberties. Homophobia has no place at Penn State or anywhere else. We are all people trying to make do until our end comes. Shouldn't we be more tolerant of those who are different from us? I know that this sounds like something that we tell children, but sometimes we never learn the simple messages of youth.
