Colin Quinn may sing to Marathon dancers

Collegian Arts Writer

Well Happy Valley, get ready. America's newest singing sensation may stop by.

No, it is not Paula Abdul. No, not that infamous bottle thrower Sebastian Bach. And no, New Kids on the Block are not making a special appearance. It is the raspy-voiced Music Television personality Colin Quinn.

Quinn, who is featured on the MTV game show Remote Control, is probably best known for a segment called "Sing Along With Colin." It is during this segment when Quinn offers his rendition of a hit song. He is best known for his mixing of different styles (Tiffany, Guns 'N' Roses, The Beatles). The man has range.

Kirsten Vensel, a former MTV intern who worked with Quinn last summer, said her experience at MTV helped in the possibility of landing Quinn at the Dance Marathon. Vensel described Quinn as "funny and witty." If he appears tomorrow at the two-day event, his humor will be a welcome distraction to all those participating. Vensel also said that Quinn rarely makes appearances like this. "He likes to do stuff for charity, though," she said.

Hopefully, Quinn can add the Dance Marathon to his list of charitable events. If he seems familiar with the college scene, he should be. Remote Control's audience and contestants are comprised almost entirely of college students. Despite the fact that he is an up-and-coming star, Quinn remains quite down to earth, according to Vensel. "He acts like an average guy," she said.

Laura Feola, the entertainment chairperson of the Dance Marathon, said that many celebrities are asked to guest host every year. "It's nice to have a positive response," she added. Feola said she hopes that Quinn's appearance will open up different avenues for future marathons.

"He gives us some more credibility," she said. "It's a selling point for next year."

If Quinn does visit University Park, he may revert back to his roots of stand-up comedy to entertain the weary White Building crowd. Quinn, who was born in Brooklyn, played the New York comedy club circuit for several years before landing the job of co-host on Remote Control.

Apparently, MTV executives like what they have seen from Quinn. In addition to being the Remote Control sidekick, he is now the sole host of Colin Quinn's Manly World which airs at 7 p.m. Mondays on MTV. The half-hour variety show features comedy, interviews with sports figures and of course, videos.

In addition to his television experience, Quinn has recently added a few film credits to his resume. According to MTV, Quinn appeared in two Paramount Pictures films. In the mega-smash Three Men and A Baby, he had a small but humorous part as a newspaper vendor who sold a toy to Tom Selleck. (Surely you remember.) In the hit Crocodile Dundee 2, he played a tough guy who helped Mick Dundee (Paul Hogan) organize a large crowd.

Hopefully, Quinn will do the same to this year's Marathon. Feola said she hopes to employ Quinn as "a guest morale team member" who is responsible for keeping dancers on their toes by playing games and giving massages. "He'll act as emcee and introduce band," she said. She added that with any luck, he will sing.
