USG elections to be held in March
Lack of election commissioners raised fears of a delay

Collegian Staff Writer

Despite concern last week that Undergraduate Student Government elections may be postponed, USG has appointed its Election Commission and elections will take place as planned March 21.

USG President Janyne Althaus submitted the names for the commission last Friday and the Senate voted on them Tuesday night.

"I am glad that everybody has been appointed and confirmed," said Abe Amoros, senate appointment and review board chairman. "They may be in conflict but we can't fiddle around. We have to get things done."

All of the students are involved in either USG or the Association of Residence Hall Students.

Last week Althaus had only selected two of the four commissioners and senators were worried that elections may have to be postponed. According to the USG Apportionment and Elections Code Act, the senate is supposed to receive four names from the president by the fourth week of the semester so the applicants can be approved.

Althaus said she had not appointed the whole commission earlier due to the lack of applicants.

The commission -- consisting of a head commissioner and three assistants -- assembles the campaign packets, oversees the voting process, regulates campaigning and organizes election debates and publicity, Senate President Ron Marlow said.

The four commissioners are:

-- Head Commissioner Brian Kocher, who is ARHS president.

-- Publicity and Debates Commissioner Wendy Goldstein, who is Althaus's public information officer.

-- Candidacy and Campaigning Commissioner Jennifer Bronzini, who is the USG Business Department Director.

-- Voting and Tallying Commissioner Chuck Wurster, who is USG Business Board Director.

Amoros said these people were chosen mostly because of their previous experience and fairness.

Senators had differing opinions about the make-up of the commission.

One senator said he wished there were more time to chose the commission.

"I am satisfied that these people were chosen," said acting Vice President Sean Wilson. "I'm saddened that we couldn't get people that weren't as involved with USG."

Other senators were satisfied with the commission.

"I don't think the individuals are in conflict," said town Senator Tony Dutzik. "I think that the individuals that were chosen were chosen very carefully."

Other senators said some of the commissioners have too many connections with elections.

"I couldn't believe the commission passed the way it did. I was disgusted," said town Senator Chris Gazze. "You need people that are involved and know what they're doing but have no direct ties to elections."
