Hispanics are ignored
Last semester the administration of this University (commented in) an article in the Collegian about the increase of minorities at Penn State. The data showed a remarkable increase of approximately one-tenth percent in the Hispanic student population. Since then a few questions have come to my mind. Does the University use (these) statistics to provide better services for Hispanic students? Are they really trying to improve the situation of Hispanic students in all of the Penn State campuses? I have the sad impression through my experiences as a student that the answer to both of these questions would have to be NO. For the most part I think PSU uses this kind of statistics for public relations. Penn State is in no way requested by the state to (have) a (certain percentage) of Hispanic students as they are for my African-American brothers and sisters. After listening to complaints from Hispanic students attending group meetings I even think that they use our statistics to establish a need for services for minorities in general; still in the implementation of those programs the special needs of the Hispanic students are the forgotten ones. Two years ago the African-American community in this institution was forced to protest the insensitive situation toward their needs that was leading into poor attrition rates among this group. The more and more I see this University since then, the more I realize how effective were their persuasion methods. Does this mean that the administration only listens to radical ways, and we, Hispanic students, should do the same thing to be listened (to)? Hispanic students, faculty, staff and community in general, it is time to get together. It is time to face the administration and fight for our rights. Just a few weeks ago, the administration in its search for images of diversity insulted us through a poorly explained issue (the language administration use vs. the Hispanic label). It is time for the administration to think harder, to be educated on our needs as an undersaved student culture. Hispanics, please attend the meetings of your groups and organizations, get together and discuss this issue. It is our time do something. Think about it.
