Letter to the Editor
Choice needed
In the Feb. 12 edition of The Daily Collegian, an article appeared concerning the removal of rock music from the area dining halls and the residence halls commons. The American Family Association is actively lobbying the Residence Hall Advisory Board to achieve this goals. They also request that the dining halls play either classical or Christian music or no music at all. I have two main problems with this campaign. First, a very small, "special interest" group on this campus is attempting to control what is being heard by the whole residence hall population. They have the idea that they have the right to distinguish what is moral and immoral for the rest of us. The only thing they are trying to accomplish here is wholesale censorship. The second problem I have is their alternate choice of music. No, I don't have a problem with classical music. I listen to it often. The idea of broadcasting Christian music to the whole campus is what bothers me. I don't know if some of these people have been hiding out in the mountains for years, but I thought Penn State's main goal was DIVERSITY! That means Christians and non-Christian! No one needs to be force-fed the word of God. There has to be some sort of choice. Therefore, I ask that all Penn State students express their opinions on this issue. The importance of this situation cannot be easily overlooked. Voice your anger over this apparent attempt to take away one of your rights. Say something before it's too late.
