"Rock music may be banished from dorm commons and dining hall areas because some students in North and South Halls find its lyrics difficult to stomach." This is how an article on Monday's front page (The Daily Collegian, Feb. 12) began.

I hope this disturbed many students as it did me. I am writing now to encourage the "silent majority" to stand up and be heard. Write and protest if you care at all.

The American Family Association petitioned to remove the porno movies from the campus two years ago. Last semester the AFA, led by Bob Bowen, attempted to get the Association of Residence Hall Students to ask for removal of Playboy, Penthouse, and Playgirl from the area post offices. And now they want rock music removed from the dining halls.

This group seems pretty effective for an organization of only five members (down from the membership of nine that Mr. Bowen quoted to ARHS last semester).

I knew nothing about the AFA until Mr. Bowen addressed ARHS. After a little reading, I found out some things about them and their founder, Donald Wildmon. In the December issue of Playboy, a number of facts about the AFA were outlined.

-- Rev. Wildmon protested the content of the film "The Last Temptation of Christ," but he had not seen the movie.

-- The American Family Association Journal (edited by Rev. Wildmon) protested the use of the word "penis" in a December 1988 episode of Saturday Night Live (in which they used the word 21 times). The article about the episode included the word "penis" 18 times.

-- Among other things this group opposes: MTV, Sassy magazine, alleged drug use by Mighty Mouse, women working outside of the home (and the suicides that it causes) and Ozzy Osborne music (and the suicides that it causes).

-- As I said before, I am writing to encourage people to stand up and be heard. Please write.
