Swimmen face monumental tests against Vols, Princeton

Collegian Sports Writer

It's now or never for the members of the men's swimming and diving team who hope to qualify for the Eastern Seaboard Championships.

Although most of the swimmers have already qualified in individual events, some will make a last effort at noon tomorrow at Dillon Gymnasium in the Lions' last dual meet of the season against Princeton and Tennessee.

Princeton coach Rob Orr said the meet was originally planned for the Tigers' new facility but was rescheduled. This weekend's matchup will be the last competition to be held in the old one.

Walt Sopp said he expects the Lions to do well in the meet and make more Eastern cuts.

"We put ourselves in a pretty good position to go after Princeton and Tennessee," Sopp said after last weekend's victories over La Salle and St. Bonaventure.

Orr said his team is finished qualifying and will concentrate on swimming fast and improving times.

Coach Peter Brown said that Penn State (6-3) could come out of the meet 1-1 with its best chance of victory against the Tigers (7-1).

"We have a shot at beating Princeton but if we don't, we don't, it's not worth blowing a gasket over," Brown said. "On paper things are probably pretty even right now, it's just a matter of who's hot and who's not."

Last season, both teams beat the Lions. Princeton won the Penn State Invitational and Easterns. Tennessee beat Penn State last year, 68-44, in a dual meet and then won the Southeast Conference Championship against teams such as Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Kentucky.

"We look at this meet as a tremendous opportunity to do some good swimming against good competition," Brown said. "Princeton has a fast pool and they always attract a nice crowd. It will definitely be a good experience for us to get things going."

A 70-41 win over Columbia on Wednesday guaranteed Princeton a share of the Ivy League title. The Tigers' last hurdle for the championship comes from Yale in two weeks. Last week, Princeton swam a shaved Harvard team. Six Tiger swimmers didn't shave, which made the difference for the Crimson, which gave Princeton its only loss of the season.

"We will swim a lineup that is going to be a good lineup for us and at the same time give people an opportunity to swim in their best events," Brown said.
