The women's track team will participate in its first team-scored meet of the season Sunday at the Barnett Bank Invitational at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
However, Coach Teri Jordan is more concerned about qualifying runners for nationals than scoring points.
Distance captain senior Stacy Prey said she will try to improve her provisional NCAA qualifying time in the 5,000-meters to an automatic qualifying mark. She will have to drop her time at the Terrier Classic from 16:36.49 to under 16:20 to do this.
Prey will run only in this event, which is scheduled for the end of the meet, so that she'll be fresh for it. A couple other runners will also compete only once, "so they can get a quality performance rather than what we might do at a conference level where the quality goes a little bit for scoring points," Jordan said.
The 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter relay teams will also shoot for NCAA qualifying times. Last week at the Millrose Games, neither team had a stellar performance, but Jordan believes they'll be sharper this weekend.
Sophomore Jackie Brown, anchor for the 1,600-meter relay said that the team is looking for about 3:44, six seconds away from its season best, to provisionally qualify.
At the Florida Invitational, runners will have the benefit of the combination of the best competition in the country and one of the fastest tracks in the country.
Florida women's track coach included Penn State in her list of the top contenders at the meet with Texas, Michigan State, Auburn, Florida and Florida State.
Judging from their excellent performances at the Millrose Games, Jordan believes that Florida and Texas are going to be No. 1 and 2 in the nation.
"We're not running against any pansie schools . . . but before we'd been running against Easterns and dominating so it's time to run against some of the best in the nation. We're not scared of doing that. We want that. It's the only way to get better."
While Jordan and assistant coach Robynne Johnson will be in Florida with some team members, assistant coach Jeri Daniels will accompany the rest of the team to the West Virginia Invitational.
The main goal in Morgantown on Sunday will be to qualify more athletes for ECACs, especially those who have come close in the past.
