Letter to the Editor
Unfair generalizations
I am writing this in response to the letter "Myth holds true" by Jonathan Burman, which appeared in the Collegian on Feb. 6. As a member of the Greek community, I was incensed at some of the comments Mr. Burman made. It is unfair to make such sweeping generalizations about fraternities. For example, Jonathan, you said that fraternities teach members "how to lie, conform, become racially insensitive and brag." Individual people teach these traits, whether they are Greek or not. You make it sound as if it's the doing of the whole system, which just isn't true. I do agree that, sadly, unacceptable events have occurred that involve fraternity members. I find them to be despicable just as you do, but you must realize these people are the rare exception, not the rule. It's very interesting that you loathe the fraternities so much and yet have found the time to attend their parties enough to conclude that the "Greek system only breeds arrogance." If Greek men are so arrogant, why do you choose to socialize with them? The most irritating statement in your letter was that fraternities ". . . perform various social functions and fundraisers that at least give them the facade of responsible behavior." FACADE?! You're correct, we do hold social functions and fundraisers. In fact, very soon the IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon will take place, during which hundreds of thousands of dollars will be raised to help children with cancer. I suppose that we Greeks devote countless hours of time and energy for this wonderful cause just to put up a "facade." Yeah, right Jonathan. It's true, fraternities (as well as sororities) aren't "all bad." In fact, they're an integral part of many students lives at Penn State. I know Greeks aren't perfect, (what organization is?) but Greek life is very rewarding, Jonathan, and I think in the future you should look a little deeper before passing judgement.
