More investigation

This refers to your Feb. 1 story "Former student files suit against Jordan." You owe your readers a fuller investigation of what happened on June 9, 1988 between Harrison and University police.

If Harrison was in fact harassed by the police for the message displayed on his vehicle, his First Amendment rights would appear to have been violated by a university that claims, recently with increasing vigor, that free speech howsoever abhorrent is protected.

If such a violation did take place, you should ask the question: "Why?". Specifically, you should consider the possibility that the First Amendment is being selectively invoked.

Your Feb. 1 story can imply that Harrison's First Amendment rights were ignored because the butt of his criticism was the leadership of this University.

Hate groups, on the other hand, whose targets are relatively powerless minorities, have been all but told by this University that they can say what they want and get away with it under the First Amendment.

Is it possible then that the University's leadership thinks that it can, when criticized, flout the First Amendment rights of its critics while expecting others, Afro-Americans or Jews for instance, to respect the rights of their critics?

You have a test case in front of you. Your investigation can help to prove or disprove the widespread notion that the University's leadership is insincere about pluralism and diversity but hides its insincerity behind a cloud of pious rhetoric.
