Incomplete commission may postpone USG elections

Collegian Staff Writer

If Undergraduate Student Government President Janyne Althaus does not select a complete Elections Commission by next Tuesday, USG elections may have to be postponed, said Senate President Ron Marlow yesterday.

Althaus said last night that two of four commissioner nominations are ready for USG Senate confirmation, but she was unable to give Senate Appointment and Review Board Chairman Abe Amoros the names last week before she went away for medical school interviews.

Althaus would not disclose the names because she wanted Amoros to see the names first.

She added that she is waiting for more applications and hopefully all four commissioners will be appointed by next week.

The commission -- consisting of a head commissioner and three assistants -- assembles the campaign packets, oversees the voting process, regulates campaigning and organizes election debates and publicity, Marlow said.

According to the USG Apportionment and Elections Code Act, the USG president chooses commission nominees from a pool of applicants who have responded to public advertising. The nominees are then reviewed by the Senate Appointment and Review Board. The senate must approve the appointees no later than the fourth week of the spring semester under current guidelines.

"There's a danger that elections will be pushed back because of this," said Town Senator Tony Dutzik. "It also makes life difficult for elections, commissioners and the election's court. There is far less time for people to prepare."

Marlow said elections can be postponed by senate action.

USG Vice President Bill Novick said few students applied and added yesterday he was not sure if Althaus had selected the commission or not.

He added that Althaus is trying her best to appoint the commission.

"I think that she is trying to make the selection as soon as possible as far as getting applications together and receiving people," he said. "I suspect SARB should be interviewing the nominee before next meeting and we will have the confirmation b Amoros said a lack of applicants is not a reason for delay because the president could have requested to choose someone other than the applicants.

"We did speak to her about (the delay)," he said.

Marlow said elections may be delayed because there may not be enough time for the commissioners to learn their duties and assemble the packets. He added that candidates may have a difficulty completing the forms necessary to run for office.

Candidates must hand in their packet Feb. 23, but commissioners usually accept packets on March 5, which is the Monday after spring break, Marlow said. He added most candidates prefer to return their packets before spring break, so they can start campaigning Monday at 12 a.m. after spring break.

Elections for USG Senatorial positions, president and vice president will take place on March 21.

One of the requirements of the packet is that presidential and vice presidential candidates receive 400 student signatures from full-time undergraduate students at University Park campus, with at least 25 signatures from each election district.

Senatorial candidates must receive 75 signatures from the area that they are representing.
