PSU asks President Bush to a gala dinner

Collegian Staff Writer

The University is planning a party, but only one invitation is out so far. President Bush has been asked to take part in the festivities to mark the completion of the six-year Campaign for Penn State.

University President Bryce Jordan and Coach Joe Paterno both sent descriptions of the event to Bush, said Mark Cody, a spokesman in the Office of Presidential Scheduling. But Bush's schedule is only made out two months in advance, so those invitations will not be looked at until March, he added.

"There are other things coming up sooner that have to be looked at," Cody said.

Official closing ceremonies will be held during the last weekend of April, although the campaign continues through June, said Bill Mahon, University spokesman. No guest list has been compiled for the dinner, he said.

Mahon said it was customary for a university the size of Penn State to invite the President to such events and added that then-President Ronald Reagan was invited to the campaign's kick-off celebration in 1984. Reagan was unable to attend the event, but former Secretary of State Don Regan did and gave the keynote address.

The University will hold several days of events to celebrate the campaign's success, Mahon said. The campaign reached its $300 million goal in November.

Most of those activities are still preliminary, Mahon said. However, the weekend will definitely begin with an academic convocation for faculty, students, staff and Centre Region residents on April 27 in Eisenhower Auditorium, he added.

The hour-long ceremony will recognize the efforts of volunteers, donors and the community, he said. The event is open to the public.

"We'd encourage everyone to take part in it who is able," he said.

The closing gala will probably be held the evening of April 28, Mahon said. A possible location is Rec Hall -- the site of the opening dinner -- but other locations are being considered, he added.

No caterer or entertainment have been scheduled for the evening, Mahon said.

As of Jan. 31 the campaign had raised $326 million.
