  • Rockview inmate arrested for alleged assault on guard: An inmate at the State Correctional Institution at Rockview was arrested Tuesday for allegedly assaulting a prison guard Friday night, state police at Rockview said.

    Edwin C. Horner, 26, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and assault by a prisoner for an alleged attack against State Corrections Officer Jesse Rush, police said.

    Homer was arraigned before District Justice Robert May. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, police said.

  • Cement blocks spill on road after truck hits phone line: A Mack truck carrying concrete blocks was damaged when the crane on the truck struck a telephone line in College Township yesterday morning, State College police said.

    The truck, which belongs to Beavertown Block Company in Middleburg, spilled blocks and cement onto Branch Road, police said. The broken blocks and cement were cleared off by College Township workers and the Alpha Fire Company.

  • Rocket launched in dorm, nobody hurt from takeoff: Someone launched a bottle rocket into a dorm room at 2:45 yesterday morning, University police said.

    Paul Rajkumar, 307 Sproul, was studying when the rocket was fired into his room from under the door, police said. Rajkumar ran out of the room but did not find anyone in the hall.

    Police have no suspects and say there was no damage reported from the incident.

  • Basketball player's nose broken during fist fight: Referees stopped an intramural basketball game Monday night when a player's nose was broken during a fight, University police said.

    The victim, whose name was not released, reportedly fouled another player on the opposing team. The fouled player then punched the victim in the face, breaking his nose, police said.

    The victim was treated and released from Centre Community Hospital, police said. An investigation continues and charges will be filed, police said.

    Authorities refused to release the names of the persons involved, but said an arrest was pending.

  • Fire: A small fire which occurred in a janitor's closet in Hamilton Hall Tuesday was put out by residents, University police said.

    A smoke detector alerted the residents to the fire, which started when someone put a chain letter they were burning in the trash, police said. No damage resulted.

  • Theft: An Apple Macintosh SE computer was reported taken from the Polymer Processing Laboratory, Room 8 Steidle, sometime between 1 and 8 yesterday morning, University police said.

    The computer is valued at $4,267. There were no signs of forced entry into the lab, and the door was locked when workers came in yesterday morning, police said. Everyone with an office in the building has a key to the lab, police said.

  • Theft: A sign worth $300 bearing the name of The Athlete's Foot, was reported taken from the the store, 236 E. Calder Way, sometime between Tuesday and yesterday, State College police said.

  • Theft: A black Giant mountain bike belonging to Morgan Malino, 319 Snyder, was reported taken sometime between 8:30 p.m. Jan. 24 and 6 p.m. Feb. 5, University police said.

    The bike, valued at $270, was locked to the rack outside the building when it was taken, police said.
